Rising waters aren’t just a future threat for the Middle Peninsula—they’re already a present challenge for many property owners. That’s why Fight the Flood is calling on homeowners, landowners, and business owners across this rural coastal Virginia community to register their properties in the Fight the Flood database today.
There’s no doubt about it—making substantial flood resiliency improvements takes money. Created by the Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission (MPPDC), the Fight the Flood initiative connects property owners facing increasing flood risk with real financial support and technical expertise to fight back.
“We put this program together to help Virginians take action against flooding by connecting them with tools, funding, and trusted professionals to protect their properties and communities,” said MPPDC Executive Director Lewie Lawrence. “We envision a resilient and thriving rural coastal Virginia where every property owner has access to solutions that defend against flooding and safeguard the future.”
By registering in the Fight the Flood database, property owners initiate a streamlined process that connects them with available grants, low-interest loans, and cost-sharing programs—including specialized assistance for septic upgrades and living shoreline installations.
To date, the Fight the Flood program has distributed over $45 million in financial assistance (loans and grants) since 2020.
“There is never any guarantee that we will have access to grant funds,” Lawrence said. “But when we do get access to those funds, property owners who have registered are among the first to gain access, as they are eligible, to that assistance.”
They’ll also be linked with a vetted network of local and regional businesses that specialize in evaluating, designing, and building flood resiliency solutions.
“Registration is the first step to unlocking the support available,” Lawrence said. “You don’t have to navigate this alone. We’re here to connect you to the funding and professionals who can help you Fight the Flood.”
